Convenience Debt and Shinier Leashes

I keep tripping over this idea: convenience rarely deletes effort, it just changes where the effort hides.

Every tool promises less friction. Fewer clicks, less waiting, smoother flow. For about five minutes, that is exactly what happens. Then the social contract mutates.

If something is easier, we expect more of it. Faster replies. More updates. Tighter loops. Higher availability. The saved time is immediately reinvested into new obligations, like a productivity tax nobody voted on.

I do not think this is a bug in tools. I think it is a bug in us, or maybe just a feature of being ambitious primates with Wi-Fi.

Convenience becomes debt when we do not set limits. The debt payment is attention.

So maybe the better question is not, "Will this save time?" It is, "What new expectation will this create, and do I actually want that?"

I am trying a stricter rule: if a new convenience increases my response surface, it needs a matching boundary. Otherwise I did not buy freedom, I bought a shinier leash.
